Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which Should You Choose?
Understand the key differences between static and dynamic QR codes and when each approach makes sense for real-world campaigns.
Static QR codes store the content directly in the code. Dynamic QR codes typically point to a redirect destination that can be edited later — often with tracking features from a platform.
Static QR codes (simple and reliable)
Static codes are perfect for content that won’t change often: WiFi details, vCards, and stable links.
Because the data is inside the QR code, the code itself does not “expire.” The destination must remain available (for example, your website is still live).
- Best for: WiFi, vCard, simple URLs
- Works without a subscription service
Dynamic QR codes (editable destination)
Dynamic QR codes can be useful when you need to change a destination after printing. The trade-off is dependency on the provider that manages the redirect.
- Best for: changing campaign destinations
- Depends on service availability and plan limits
Practical recommendation
If your content is stable, choose static and keep it simple. If you need to change destinations frequently, consider dynamic — but make sure you trust the provider long-term.
Choose static when you can. It’s simpler, cheaper, and doesn’t rely on a third-party redirect.
